*DirecTV is set to unveil a significant update for its Gemini device users, introducing AI-generated screensavers that let customers feature themselves in custom digital images and short clips. This move comes as the satellite TV provider grapples with a declining subscriber base amid fierce competition from streaming services, according to industry insights, The Street reports.
With more viewers cutting the cord, DirecTV faces challenges in retaining customers. Recent data indicates that 83% of Americans now use streaming platforms, while only 36% maintain cable or satellite subscriptions. Reports highlight a loss of 1.03 million cable subscribers and 495,000 satellite customers, including from DirecTV and Dish, in Q2 2024 alone.

DirecTV’s new AI-generated wallpapers will trigger after 10 minutes of idle time on Gemini devices. Customers can access this feature by scanning a QR code to download the Glance app, then uploading a personal photo to create a 30-second AI-crafted video. Additionally, users can use voice commands via the Gemini remote to modify the video’s clothing color or style.
“With Glance AI, TV screensavers become a smart content discovery, personalization, and AI-commerce experience,” said DirecTV Senior Vice President of Product Marketing Vikash Sharma.
“DIRECTV audiences who stream TV through our Gemini devices will now get the opportunity to reimagine their interactions with their TV screen, with personalized content, entertainment, news, and shopping recommendations in real time,” Sharma added.
The integration of artificial intelligence in marketing is raising concerns among consumers. A survey from Washington State University’s Carson College of Business found that just 37% of Americans feel at ease with AI-powered marketing, while 94% voiced worries about privacy issues, deceptive content, and job displacement caused by AI.
“While AI offers exciting possibilities for personalization and efficiency, businesses must be mindful of potential consumer hesitations,” said Andrew Perkins, professor of marketing at WSU. “By understanding and addressing these perceptions early, companies can leverage AI responsibly and effectively, avoiding pitfalls that arise from overlooking customer concerns.”
