*During a spirited SiriusXM Urban View Town Hall hosted by Clay Cane and Reecie Colbert, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) and DNC Vice Chair Malcolm Kenyatta addressed some of the most pressing questions on Democratic leadership, representation, and strategy ahead of 2028. Crockett didn’t hold back as she discussed the obstacles facing progressives and minorities within the Democratic Party.
Asked by a caller whether she and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are being blocked by the Democratic establishment from leadership roles such as the top seat on the Oversight Committee, Crockett replied, “I think your callers are very well aware of systems that still prevent even those of us who really want to prove that our party is the party of the people. There is an inside, outside game. I mean, I think if the outside could vote, then I would be the clear winner.”
She added, “I think that the average person would say, we trust her as a messenger. We also trust her as the prosecutor of the case against Donald Trump, which is on Oversight, what we are supposed to do….”.
She emphasized that her pursuit of the Oversight role is not about personal ambition but about readiness: “I seek roles because I believe that I am the person for the moment… the people need to believe that Democrats are listening, and that they are going to give them the fighter that they are looking for to go after this man and this administration because they are harming us.”
Crockett also tackled speculation about the future of Democratic presidential candidates, calling out donor influence and implicit bias in the primary process.
“There’s a lot of people that are like, you know what? Like, let’s go find the safest white boy we can find,” she said, pointing out that donors are already aligning behind a non-Black, non-woman candidate. “So they have – quote unquote, “they” – have chosen. When I say “they,” it’s the same donors that most likely had their opinions about Joe Biden…” she added.
She acknowledged the party’s fear of losing with a woman at the top of the ticket, but pushed back on giving in to that fear: “Here is what I want people to understand… don’t give up your power.”
The full town hall airs Thursday, May 15, at 2 p.m. ET on SiriusXM Urban View channel 126.
