*Cynthia Erivo’s casting as “Jesus” in the Hollywood Bowl’s production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” has unleashed a firestorm of criticism across social media. The internet has labeled the decision blasphemous, with viral clips of Erivo’s performance intensifying the backlash.
As The Root reports, on TikTok, one user declared, “Jesus Christ will not be mocked,” condemning the casting of a “Black queer actress” as disrespectful to Christianity.
The TikToker added: “This is blasphemy. Christians are outraged because they say Jesus Christ is a man and should be portrayed as such. It’s pure mockery to have a queer woman portray our Lord and Savior, but that’s always been Hollywood’s mission– to disrespect Christianity.” He went on to say that “the things she stands for are anti-Christ.”
Critics argue that portraying Jesus, a traditionally male figure, with a Black queer woman mocks the faith. “This is blasphemy,” the TikToker continued, claiming Hollywood’s intent is to “disrespect Christianity” while sparing other religions.
Social media posts on X echoed this sentiment, with users calling Erivo’s casting an “abomination to God” and “repulsive, sacrilegious.”

Some criticized her appearance, with one user describing her hands and stiletto nails as “the creepiest things” and another claiming the casting “tainted Ted Neeley’s legacy,” referencing the 1973 film’s star. Many see it as Hollywood pushing a “woke” agenda to provoke rather than create art.
Supporters, however, defend Erivo, arguing the backlash stems from racism and homophobia. Advocates say the musical’s history of challenging norms aligns with Erivo’s casting, emphasizing her vocal and acting prowess over identity.
Erivo addressed the controversy in a Billboard interview, saying, “Why not? You can’t please everyone.” She described the role as a “three-day performance at the Hollywood Bowl where I get to sing my face off,” noting the musical’s inclusive spirit.
