“Again, I don’t want my doctor to be mad at me,” Booker told reporters. “But I really spent time dehydrating myself beforehand, so I did not have to go to the bathroom.”
At 56 years old, that’s some next-level devotion! Most men his age would probably need to pause for bathroom breaks during an eight-hour sleep, let alone a day-long speech. When asked how he prepared, Booker explained, “I stopped eating on Friday, and then stopped drinking the night before I started on Monday.” Someone break out the Gatorade stat!
From Athlete to Senator
Let’s not forget Booker’s athletic background. He played football in high school and college, and boy did it come in handy!
“I know when you get to hydrate, you get a lot of cramps,” he shared. “That was the biggest thing I was fighting, was that different muscle groups are starting to really cramp up.”
Imagine trying to give a speech while also fighting muscle spasms. Talk about multitasking!
Booker’s strategy involved his aides helping out, like taking his chair away so he couldn’t sit down. The desperation for a seat can lead people to do unbelievable things, but this was certainly a new level.

“It’s a lot of physical challenges,” he admitted. “Definitely making it that long for a guy, as I said, Chris Murphy and I joked, we’re not the same spot in our 40s like we were nine years ago.”

Booker didn’t just rely on willpower. He credited prayer and faith as part of his secret weapon. “I’m a person of faith,” he said. He shared that he and Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) prayed together on the Senate floor.

I always felt there was a strange shadow in this institution that the longest speech…was held by Thurmond,” Booker said.
