*In a stunning display of endurance and determination, Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) pulled off a record-breaking feat by delivering the longest speech in Senate history. This marathon event lasted for a whopping 25 hours and 5 minutes. Just to put things in perspective, that’s longer than a marathon-watch of an entire TV series!
Slamming Policies
Booker’s lengthy speech began on Monday, March 31, 2025, and wrapped up on April 1 at 8:05 p.m. ET. He aimed at President Trump’s policies during his second term, complaining about spending cuts in upcoming tax legislation, The Hill is reporting. This crusade wasn’t just for fun; it was to call out serious issues like Social Security cuts, immigration, and threats to democracy. It’s hard to get bored with that line-up!
Booker smashed the previous record set by Strom Thurmond (S.C.), who held the mic for 24 hours and 18 minutes back in 1957. What a difference in causes! Thurmond was all about civil rights legislation, while Booker is advocating for the rights and needs of modern Americans. Talk about a glow-up!
The No-Bathroom Game
Now here’s where it gets really interesting. How did Booker manage to stand up and speak for more than a day without eating or drinking? Well, he decided to dehydrate himself to avoid bathroom breaks. Yes, you heard that right!

“Again, I don’t want my doctor to be mad at me,” Booker told reporters. “But I really spent time dehydrating myself beforehand, so I did not have to go to the bathroom.”
At 56 years old, that’s some next-level devotion! Most men his age would probably need to pause for bathroom breaks during an eight-hour sleep, let alone a day-long speech. When asked how he prepared, Booker explained, “I stopped eating on Friday, and then stopped drinking the night before I started on Monday.” Someone break out the Gatorade stat!
From Athlete to Senator
Let’s not forget Booker’s athletic background. He played football in high school and college, and boy did it come in handy!
“I know when you get to hydrate, you get a lot of cramps,” he shared. “That was the biggest thing I was fighting, was that different muscle groups are starting to really cramp up.”
Imagine trying to give a speech while also fighting muscle spasms. Talk about multitasking!
Booker’s strategy involved his aides helping out, like taking his chair away so he couldn’t sit down. The desperation for a seat can lead people to do unbelievable things, but this was certainly a new level.
All-Nighter Alert
He also pulled an all-nighter. That’s right! No sleep for him, which definitely sounds like a recipe for a disaster when combined with no food and water.
“It’s a lot of physical challenges,” he admitted. “Definitely making it that long for a guy, as I said, Chris Murphy and I joked, we’re not the same spot in our 40s like we were nine years ago.”
At one point, he was joined by Senator Chris Murphy, who knows a thing or two about long speeches. Murphy held his own filibuster for 14 hours and 50 minutes back in 2016 after the tragic shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. But he must have been thinking, “Man, this guy Booker is taking it to another level!”
The Power of Prayer
Booker didn’t just rely on willpower. He credited prayer and faith as part of his secret weapon. “I’m a person of faith,” he said. He shared that he and Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) prayed together on the Senate floor.
He even quoted a Bible verse for inspirational vibes: “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings on eagles.” Can I get an “Amen” for whipping out scripture during a Senate speech?
Break Time Blues
Oh, and let’s not forget his little break for an opening prayer. Senator Barry Black thanked various teams for their hard work “throughout the night.” Gotta give a shout out to the real MVPs keeping the place running smoothly, right?
Despite being tired and hoarse, Booker made it clear that he felt it was important to speak up.
“What’s most clear to me tonight is that this is just the beginning, that Americans across this country, no matter their title or party, are ready to be heard,” he declared.
Making History
While holding the record, Booker was well aware of whose record he was breaking, and it certainly mattered to him.
I always felt there was a strange shadow in this institution that the longest speech…was held by Thurmond,” Booker said.
In a world of politics that sometimes feels out of touch, it was refreshing for a senator to use this moment to spotlight modern issues while breaking records.
Booker wasn’t just chasing an arbitrary milestone; he wanted to elevate the voices of Americans. “The mission was really to elevate the voices of Americans, to tell some of their really painful stories,” Booker explained.
So, as Booker takes his victory lap, you can’t help but admire this unusual marathon of civic duty, stamina, and a sprinkle of drama. Whether you find it inspiring or just plain weird, there’s no denying that Senator Cory Booker made his mark in history — all while standing up for America.
