Guillory resigns after racist comments and viral protest clash
*Leroy “LJ” Guillory, chairman of the Compton Public Safety Commission, has officially resigned following national backlash over racist remarks and a physical confrontation with a community activist. His resignation will take effect Dec. 31, but he announced the decision during a tense news conference on Dec. 10.
The final straw came after viral footage showed Guillory allegedly poking activist Najee Ali in the eye during a Dec. 5 protest. Ali had organized the demonstration to demand Guillory’s ouster, citing what he called a pattern of inflammatory rhetoric and behavior.
Remarks targeting Latino residents sparked citywide outrage
Guillory’s downfall began earlier this year during a public meeting, when he advocated for federal immigration raids in Compton. He told attendees he would contact White House border czar Tom Homan and invite ICE to “deal with” undocumented residents.
Compton is over 65% Latino, and critics said the remarks amounted to a racially charged threat.
Immigrant families expressed fear and confusion, while local leaders from both Black and Latino communities condemned Guillory’s actions as divisive and dangerous.

Mayor Emma Sharif demanded resignation, community leaders applauded
On Dec. 10, Mayor Emma Sharif formally called for Guillory’s resignation, citing the “negative impact” of his continued leadership. Hours later, Guillory complied—announcing not only his resignation but also his plan to run for mayor in 2026.
Najee Ali, a prominent community organizer, praised the decision in a public statement:
“With the resignation of Leroy Guillory as Chairman of the Compton Public Safety Committee following his racist remarks against Latino residents, I sincerely hope this moment marks the beginning of healing between African American and Latino community members. Mayor Emma Sharif stood up for what was right when our city needed her most, and we are forever grateful for her leadership and courage.”
Protest turns physical, battery complaint under investigation
During the Dec. 5 protest outside Compton City Hall, tensions escalated when Guillory confronted Ali face-to-face. Footage shows Guillory reaching out and allegedly jabbing Ali in the eye, leading to a police complaint for battery.
Ali has described the poke as deliberate and aggressive. Guillory insists he acted in self-defense. The Compton Sheriff’s Department is actively investigating the incident, but no updates have been released as of Dec. 11.

Guillory defends immigration stance, denies racism
Despite stepping down, Guillory continues to defend his remarks as a legitimate public safety concern. He claims his words were taken out of context and denies any racial motivation behind his comments.
Community groups, including the Latino Chamber of Commerce of Compton, strongly disagreed. They accused him of deflecting accountability and endangering vulnerable populations through reckless speech.
Resignation ends turbulent appointment already under scrutiny
Guillory’s appointment by Mayor Sharif in early 2025 drew controversy from the start due to his criminal record. He previously served more than 15 years in federal prison for kidnapping and related charges.
While some viewed his public service as redemption, others saw red flags. His recent actions solidified critics’ concerns and reignited discussions around leadership vetting and accountability.
What this moment means for Compton’s future
The resignation signals a turning point in Compton’s ongoing battle with racial tensions, immigrant rights, and political accountability. Community leaders say it’s an opportunity to reset the narrative and focus on unity.
With Guillory eyeing a mayoral run, the 2026 race may bring those tensions right back to the surface. For now, many hope this chapter closes with lessons learned—and fewer viral videos.
