*According to a press release sent to EURweb, a broad coalition of Compton Latino and African American community leaders will hold a press conference today (12-09-25) demanding the immediate removal of Leroy “L.J.” Guillory from his position as Chairman of Public Safety for the City of Compton by Mayor Emma Sharif.
Coalition members state that Guillory’s past criminal history and his recent inflammatory statements have made him unfit to serve in a role responsible for public safety. Community leaders point to previous publicly reported convictions that Guillory once served time in prison for kidnapping in 1991, a very violent crime. —concerns they say undermine public trust in the position he holds.
Leaders are also condemning comments Guillory made at a recent public meeting, where he called for federal immigration authorities — including ICE and the Homeland Security “Border Czar” — to come into Compton to “deal with” Latino residents. Community organizations say his remarks were racially divisive and dangerous.

The situation escalated last Friday at a press conference outside Compton City Hall, when activists alleged that Guillory intentionally poked civil rights advocate Najee Ali, Senior Organizer with Los Angeles Metropolitan Churches, in the eye during a confrontation.
Ali has filed a criminal complaint, and the Compton Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the incident as a possible battery.
“The City of Compton deserves leadership that brings people together — not someone who uses intimidation, inflammatory rhetoric, or physical aggression,” the coalition said in a joint statement.
