*A photo of a modestly sized burrito has triggered criticism of Chipotle Mexican Grill, after a college student claimed they paid $12.28 for what they described as a surprisingly small meal. The purchase was made at a location in La Jolla, California, and the customer said the burrito was barely bigger than their palm.
The Daily Mail reports that the student uploaded two images to Reddit, one showing the burrito wrapped in gold foil and another without the wrapping for scale. “I am upset. I thought the [gold] wrapping made it look small but no,” they wrote. They also explained, “I got barbacoa, rice, beans, cheese, lettuce, and salsa, just coming out of a midterm as well. I’ve never had portions be a problem at chipotle and this is my first time.”
One commenter reacted to the post, writing, “Yeah that’s a f**king rip off, I hate Chipotle,” while another added, “Nah I would 100% get replacement lol.”

Some users shared ordering tips, including selecting a burrito bowl with a tortilla on the side or using the mobile app to add extra toppings that do not carry an additional charge.
The debate over Chipotle’s portion sizes comes as the company introduces a GLP-1-focused menu with smaller, high-protein items, including protein cups and high-fiber bowls. A press release stated: “With the rise of GLP-1s and a broader focus on macronutrients, Chipotle’s new High Protein Menu offers more ways for guests to get the protein they want in the portions that work for them, whether that is a lighter bite or a more substantial build.”
The controversy also follows recent earnings commentary in which the company’s leadership indicated that recent pricing adjustments have produced positive results and signaled room for additional increases without reducing customer traffic.
