*Viola Davis and Ryan Coogler became emotional while paying tribute to Chadwick Boseman as he received a posthumous Hollywood Walk of Fame star, reflecting on his legacy and impact.
Friends, family, and fans gathered on Thursday to celebrate Boseman’s life and legacy, five years after his passing at 43. The ceremony was attended by Boseman’s widow, Taylor Simone Ledward Boseman, actors Michael B. Jordan and Letitia Wright, and Disney CEO Bob Iger.
Davis, who starred with Boseman in his final film “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” delivered a heartfelt tribute, reflecting on her enduring memories of the actor. “I have to believe that Chadwick is still alive. I can’t use the word gone or death, really,” she said. “When thinking about him, it’s like the quote, ‘When the last person who has a memory of you [dies] that’s when you’ll truly be dead.’”

Davis recalled conversations with Boseman about “the cap of success” and “the significance of transcendence.” Davis added, “I thank him for what he left behind in me, which is a burning amber that always guides me to a higher meaning of my work and my purpose. This star, as beautiful as it is on the Walk of Fame, shines a whole lot less brighter than Chadwick does in heaven.”
Director Ryan Coogler, who worked with Boseman on “Black Panther,” also grew emotional as he reflected on their early meeting. “Chad felt thousands of years old. He was that calm and that wise,” Coogler said. He recounted how Boseman had secretly met him during a press tour for “Creed.”
“He somehow snuck into a hotel room I was in…for us to have a one-on-one meeting to talk about working together on Black Panther.” Boseman smiled when asked how he did it: “That was the Panther.”

Coogler concluded, “We continue to carry him with us. Chad was a star deserving of a star on the Walk of Fame, but he was also our most incredible jewel. He reflected light, he refracted it, and when he did, he showed the greatness of our people, and the universe of our shared humanity. Thank you, Chad.”
