*Celebrity Chef Carla Hall is bringing a taste of Southern joy to Washington, D.C., with the opening of Bumblebirds, her new fried chicken and cocktail bar. The Capitol Hill restaurant is set to welcome guests on March 16, offering a menu inspired by Hall’s grandmother and her Southern roots.
According to PEOPLE, Bumblebirds will serve crispy fried chicken sandwiches on buttery brioche buns, a pimento cheese board, biscuits, and an iced tea and lemonade bar. Signature drinks include the bumblebird cocktail and an elderflower julep. Hall says she wants visitors to feel warmth, community, and happiness when they enter the space.
“I want them to walk in and feel like, ‘Wow, this feels like home and it feels bright and warm. And I feel like this is a place where I want to hang out. I feel like it’s a place where I feel a sense of community and joy,” she says. “I think more than anything, I want people to feel the joy.”
In addition to her restaurant, Hall is preparing to debut her one-woman show, “Carla Hall — Please Underestimate Me,” at Maryland’s Olney Theatre Center this summer. She has long dreamed of performing in theater, citing her childhood desire to be “the Black Carol Burnett.”
The show reflects her life experiences, including lessons learned from successes and setbacks, and aims to inspire audiences to take risks and pursue career changes.
“I really want people to walk away feeling like there are ways that I move in my life and principles that I follow,” she says. “And I accept the highs and lows of my life. And so I’m hoping that they will leave and they’re like, ‘Oh, I can do something like this. I can do something hard and I can be a career changer.’”
Bumblebirds opens March 16 in D.C., and her one-woman show debuts in June at the Olney Theatre Center.
