*BLK has released its second annual State of Black Singles Report, offering new insights into how Black singles across the United States are approaching modern dating. Based on responses from more than 5,000 participants, the report highlights a clear shift toward intentional relationships and shared values.
According to the findings, casual dating trends are declining as more singles focus on long-term goals. A significant 75% of respondents said they are seeking a serious or marriage-minded connection, signaling a move away from the so-called “situationship” era. At the same time, dating app usage remains strong, with 75% of users actively engaging on platforms daily or weekly.
“People aren’t tired of dating apps; they’re just tired of unserious people,” said Amber Cooper, Head of Brand at BLK, per the news release.

“Black singles in America are officially over the ‘situationship’ era. They are protecting their energy, setting real boundaries, and asking for true commitment. They’re coming to BLK because they want to skip the games and find someone who understands their culture and intentions right from the start,” Cooper added.
The report also shows evolving definitions of trust and commitment in the digital age. Seventy percent of respondents consider hidden emotional intimacy to be cheating, while 52.3% view keeping a dating app active after becoming exclusive as a betrayal. These findings reflect a growing emphasis on digital loyalty and transparency in relationships.
Gen Z respondents are driving some of the most notable changes. More than 57% report being celibate or not sexually active, stepping away from hookup culture in favor of protecting their well-being. Despite this, over 82% of Gen Z participants said they are open to or interested in marriage, underscoring a focus on long-term partnership.
Financial expectations are also shifting, with 58.8% of respondents prioritizing character and ambition over income. Additionally, 67% believe dating expenses should be flexible, reflecting a move toward more balanced and practical approaches to dating.
Overall, the report suggests that Black singles are redefining modern dating by setting clearer boundaries, valuing emotional connection, and pursuing relationships with greater intention.
