*The Black Movie Hall of Fame revealed its picks for the top 10 films of 2025, led by “Sinners.”
“It was an incredibly diverse year of cinema,” said Shawn Edwards, executive director of the Black Movie Hall of Fame, per the news release. “Things started off with a bang early in the year with the release of ‘Sinners,’ an original film that became a huge box office success. Directed by Ryan Coogler, ‘Sinners’ became a cultural phenomenon. It also proved that Coogler is this generation’s most talented and influential auteur.”
Edwards added, “He is a supreme storyteller and gifted filmmaker. There were also several powerful documentaries released along with a film about Sarah Rector who became one of the richest Black people in America at age 11 in 1913. ‘Sarah’s Oil’ was a perfect example of the many little known Black stories that deserve to be told and shown on the big screen.”
The Black Movie Hall of Fame is set to open in spring 2026 in Kansas City, Missouri, at the newly renovated Boone Theater in the Historic 18th and Vine Jazz District. The institution will honor Black cinema and the creators who have shaped it, both on and off the screen. Visitors will experience interactive exhibits, private screenings, behind-the-scenes artifacts, and legendary film memorabilia, bringing the history of Black filmmaking to life in new and immersive ways.

“The Black Movie Hall of Fame is more than a museum—it’s a movement,” Edwards said. “It’s a place where the artistry, passion, and resilience of Black filmmakers are celebrated, ensuring their stories are preserved for generations to come. This landmark institution will serve as a beacon for Black cinema, amplifying the voices of creators past and present while providing a platform for the next generation of storytellers to shine.”
