*Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” failed to appear on several high-profile year-end movie rankings. The omission surprised many, given the film’s strong critical reception and significant awards recognition throughout 2025.
The Michael B. Jordan-led horror film was notably absent from Rolling Stone’s annual top 20 movies list. Adding to the backlash, Variety also released its best movies of 2025 selections without including “Sinners” on either list curated by critics Peter Debruge and Owen Gleiberman. The film did not even receive an honorable mention, intensifying backlash from fans and industry observers.
Set in a small Southern town, “Sinners” centers on twin brothers, both portrayed by Jordan, who return home after time spent working with Al Capone in Chicago. Their plan to open a lively juke joint unravels when a dangerous vampire emerges on opening night. The supernatural thriller blends horror with period drama, leaving a lasting impression on audiences and critics alike.
Despite being overlooked by these publications, the film earned major recognition elsewhere. Both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute named “Sinners” among their top ten films of 2025. It also secured seven nominations at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, and led the field at the 31st Critics’ Choice Awards with 17 nominations, including Best Picture.
Critics of Variety’s list have pointed to the outlet’s earlier skepticism surrounding the film’s financial outlook. In April 2025, Variety shared on X, “Sinners has amassed $61 million in its global debut. It’s a great result for an original, R-rated horror film, yet the Warner Bros. release has a $90 million price tag before global marketing expenses, so profitability remains a ways away.” The film ultimately went on to gross $367 million worldwide, ranking among Warner Bros.’ top-performing titles this year.
Attention now turns to awards season momentum. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is set to announce its shortlists on Tuesday, offering an early glimpse into voter sentiment ahead of the 98th Academy Awards in March, where “Sinners” is widely projected to be a dominant contender.
