*Growing tomatoes at home sounds simple enough — until the harvest comes up short. One of the most overlooked factors in tomato success is where the plants are placed. Choosing the wrong location can sabotage an entire season, leading to stunted plants, minimal fruit, and a garden full of disease.
As Southern Living reports, skip the shady corners of your yard. Tomatoes are sun-hungry plants that need a minimum of six hours of direct light each day to perform well. Without adequate sun exposure, plants tend to grow tall and spindly while producing very little fruit. Gardeners working with limited sunlight may find modest success with smaller varieties like cherry or grape tomatoes, but larger types such as beefsteak will likely struggle to reach full maturity.
Watch out for spots where water tends to collect after rainfall. Soil that stays wet for extended periods creates the ideal environment for fungal and bacterial diseases to take hold, and root rot becomes a very real threat. Improving soil drainage through amendments or switching to container growing can make a significant difference for tomatoes in moisture-prone areas.
Avoid returning tomatoes to the same patch of ground season after season. Repeating the same planting location allows harmful soil-borne pathogens to accumulate over time, weakening plants and inviting disease. Rotating to a fresh spot every three to four years — and filling that space with unrelated crops like corn, cabbage, or broccoli — helps break that cycle.
Keep tomatoes away from other nightshade family members, including peppers, potatoes, and eggplants. These close botanical relatives are vulnerable to many of the same diseases, among them blight, bacterial wilt, and anthracnose. Grouping them together only makes it easier for those problems to jump from plant to plant.
Finally, resist the urge to squeeze tomato plants into small containers. Cramped pots restrict root development and leave taller plants unstable and prone to tipping. Most varieties do well in a pot at least 12 inches wide, while larger indeterminate types need containers closer to 16 inches to truly thrive.
