*A$AP Rocky is taking a bold leap into Hollywood with “Highest 2 Lowest,” the latest film from director Spike Lee. Set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the high-stakes drama pairs the rapper-turned-actor with Academy Award-winner Denzel Washington in what Rocky calls a “dream come true” moment.
Written by William Alan Fox, “Highest 2 Lowest” is a modern reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller “High and Low.” Lee, however, has emphasized that this isn’t a remake. “This is a reinterpretation,” he told Deadline, underscoring the film’s fresh take on the source material.
Rocky stars as Yung Felon, an ambitious up-and-coming rapper. Speaking with Variety, he reflected on his experience working alongside one of his idols. “It was like a f—ing dream come true,” he said, admitting, “It was difficult to not fan the f— out every millisecond of the f—ing duration. It was crazy — it’s f—ing Denzel, man.”
Despite the star power around him, Rocky stepped into the role with full confidence. “Nah, I was born for this,” he said when asked if the weight of the moment was intimidating. “I’m not gonna waste nobody’s time… You’ve got to give it your all.”
His enthusiasm didn’t stop at the dramatic scenes. The Grammy-nominated artist also took part in action-heavy sequences. “I had some bungee wires on, so it was safe,” he explained. “It was action-packed, and I was on my Black Tom Cruise s—.” Asked if he’s eyeing more action roles, Rocky said: “I think I need to be the new Black James Bond.”
The film stars Washington as a legendary New York music executive pulled into a harrowing ransom scheme. The ensemble cast includes Jeffrey Wright and rapper Ice Spice. “Highest 2 Lowest” explores ambition, power, and betrayal in the modern music industry.
For Rocky, the opportunity to act opposite Washington was both humbling and inspiring. “I’m always gonna be a student and a fan of certain people, and I’m always going to give them their flowers,” he said. “I’m never going to be too big to be able to say that I had to hold my composure from not fanning out.”
“Highest 2 Lowest” will arrive in select theaters on August 22 before launching globally on Apple TV+ on September 5.
