*A$AP Rocky is stepping into a new chapter of his career, sharing the screen with none other than Denzel Washington in Spike Lee’s upcoming film “Highest 2 Lowest.” In a recent interview with Variety, the rapper opened up about what it meant to work with two of his longtime idols and how he approached the project with unwavering confidence.
“Nah, I was born for this,” Rocky said when asked if he felt intimidated starring alongside the Oscar winner. “I’m not gonna waste nobody’s time. This is what I do, this is the same approach you would take to making an album or to directing or designing anything: You’ve got to give it your all.”
Still, the 36-year-old artist admitted it was hard not to geek out. “It was like a f—— dream come true,” he said, adding, “It was difficult to not fan the f— out every millisecond of the f—— duration. It was crazy — it’s f——- Denzel, man.”
Rocky added, “I’m always gonna be a student and a fan of certain people, and I’m always going to give them their flowers,” he said, citing Washington’s movie “Malcolm X” as a personal favorite.
“Highest 2 Lowest,” a modern reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic “High and Low,” hits select theaters on August 22 before landing on Apple TV+ September 5. Washington stars as a revered New York music mogul caught in a dangerous ransom plot. The cast also includes Jeffrey Wright, Ice Spice, and A$AP Rocky.
Spike Lee clarified to Deadline that the film is “not a remake, this is a reinterpretation.”
This marks Lee and Washington’s fifth collaboration together, continuing a creative partnership that began with “Mo’ Better Blues” in 1990.
