*A24 has released the first trailer for “Mother Mary,” a darkly seductive musical drama starring Anne Hathaway as a fictional pop star.
Set for an April 2026 release, the film sees Hathaway portraying Mother Mary, a performer reconnecting with her estranged friend and former costume designer, Sam Anselm, played by Michaela Coel.
“Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Coel, 38) on the eve of her comeback performance,” per the official synopsis.
In a July Vogue cover story, Hathaway explained her process behind inhabiting the mind and body of a pop star.
“The humility of that — showing up every day knowing you’re going to suck. And it has to be okay. You’re not ‘bad.’ You’re just a beginner,” she said. “Getting to that mindset — I had to shed some things that were hard to shed. It was welcome. But it was hard, the way transformational experiences can be hard.”

Directed by David Lowery, “Mother Mary” promises an enigmatic and sinister narrative characteristic of A24’s bold storytelling approach.
The film features an ensemble cast including Hunter Schafer, Alba Baptista, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Sian Clifford, FKA Twigs, Isaura Barbé-Brown, and Atheena Frizzell. Music for the project is provided by Charli XCX.
Hathaway is booked and busy in 2026 as “Mother Mary” is one of four films she stars in next year, alongside “The Devil Wears Prada 2” (May 1), “The Odyssey” (July 17), and “Verity” (October 2).
“Mother Mary” hits theaters in April 2026. Watch the trailer above.
