*Akon says his next business move may focus on men’s haircare, specifically hair units designed for men experiencing hair loss, Complex reports.
During a recent appearance on “Big Boy’s Neighborhood,” the singer spoke candidly about his own hair journey and revealed plans to enter the growing market. The topic came up when Akon was asked about his hairpiece. The artist has been open about his experience with hair restoration, previously confirming in 2022 that he traveled to Turkey for a transplant procedure that cost $7,500. At the time, the revelation sparked jokes across social media, with users turning the news into memes about the singer’s hair.
During the conversation with Big Boy, Akon said he keeps his head shaved and relies on a hairpiece that looks fresh for a short period after installation. “But then after that, you got to go back to see the barber to get it touched up,” he said. “The problem with me, I travel so much, if I don’t fly my barber down, then I got to keep the durag on super tight.”

Males hair units can cost as much as $2,000 and function much like wigs commonly worn by women. Akon noted that “the difference is you cut your hair bald, but you leave the sides open. The area where you you you losing hair, they replace it with a piece,” he explained. “You’d be surprised how many celebrities actually got it.”
Akon first began shaving his hair when he noticed hair thinning around the crown of his head. Despite the changes, he approaches the topic with honesty rather than insecurity. “I think people be so insecure with themselves to the point where they have to feel like they got to hide it. But there’s nothing really bad about it. I mean, you’re getting older,” Akon said.
Now, he’s looking to turn the experience into a new venture. Akon confirmed he is “definitely coming out with some units,” adding, “Man, they are so popular. They sell more than wigs.”
