The agreement will bring the independent studio together with DeepMind researchers to develop tools for filmmakers, Variety reports. The deal gives A24 access to DeepMind’s research and infrastructure as both sides explore new production workflows. It does not allow Google to use A24’s film library or company data.
Scott Belsky, the A24 partner who leads A24 Labs, told The Wall Street Journal that the studio wants a different approach from AI tools marketed around speed or lower costs. A24 Labs has been working on uses such as AI-generated storyboards.
Here’s more from Google:
This partnership creates a deep research and development collaboration between A24 and Google DeepMind spanning multiple projects over time. By anchoring Google DeepMind’s innovations directly within the creative process, A24 and its filmmakers can help shape new technology in service of their vision and expand their storytelling possibilities. This hands-on collaboration provides Google DeepMind with invaluable feedback and guidance from leading artists.

“We think there are better uses that preserve creative control and support risk-taking,” Belsky said. He added that the tools “won’t look anything like the prompted generation type of AI that people feel uncomfortable with.”
DeepMind executive Eli Collins framed the partnership as a way to put emerging technology directly into creative hands.
“We believe breakthroughs happen when you get technology into the hands of the best minds in the field,” Collins said.
“We believe the best way to develop tools that empower artists is to work directly with them,” said Demis Hassabis, Co‑founder & CEO of DeepMind.
“By collaborating with filmmakers and industry leaders like A24 from the beginning, we can build new AI features to support artists in authentic, meaningful storytelling that helps enable their creative vision,” he added.
