*A former elementary school teacher in South Jersey has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a student and having a child with the boy.
Laura Caron, 34, of Cape May Court House, was arrested on Wednesday on charges related to alleged abuse that occurred between 2016 and 2020 at her home, 6ABC reports. The case came to light when the victim’s father noticed a resemblance between his son and the teacher’s 5-year-old child and posted about it on social media.
The victim and his brother were former students of Caron, and the families had developed a close friendship, leading to the children spending significant time at her residence. Caron first met the boy when he was a fifth-grader at Middle Township Elementary School.
“The charges stem from an investigation revealing that Caron engaged in an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student — born in 2005 — who had been residing in her home between 2016 and 2020,” reiterated a press note from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.

Court documents revealed the victim was 13 years old at the time he lived with Caron, who was 28. She was legally recognized as a “resource family parent“ for the children. The victim’s sister, who also stayed at the teacher’s home, alleged to police that the sexual abuse began when he was 11 years old. Another sibling allegedly told investigators that he witnessed Caron assaulting the boy.
The victim confirmed to police that he had a sexual relationship with his former teacher and fathered her child.
“When the district was first advised of the allegations, the staff member was immediately placed on and continues to be on paid administrative leave. Additional questions should be directed to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office,” said Middle Township School District Superintendent Dr. David Salvo in a statement to Action News.
“I want to personally assure the parents of Middle Township that we are taking every step possible to ensure the safety of our children. Our department is working closely with the Prosecutor’s Office to ensure that every aspect of this case is thoroughly investigated,” said Middle Township Police Chief Tracey Super.
Caron is charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child. She is being held at the Cape May County Correctional Center.
