‘Them: The Scare’ Scares Up Horror in 90s Los Angeles with Deborah Ayorinde | WATCH

*In the first season of the Prime Video horror anthology series “Them,” viewers were immersed in 1950s Los Angeles, a setting that blended racial tension with supernatural horror. Now, the series returns with “Them: The Scare”, a new chapter set in 1991 Los Angeles. This time, the narrative focuses on LAPD detective Dawn Reeve, played by Deborah Ayorinde, as she grapples with a series of gruesome murders that have plagued the city.

In an interview with EUR, Ayorinde provided insights into her character and the eerie world of “Them: The Scare.”

“Dawn is a detective who takes on a case that none of the other detectives want to touch,” Ayorinde shared. “She’s deeply connected to her community and feels drawn to this case, unraveling both its mysteries and her own journey in a terrifying yet captivating manner.” Reflecting on the historical backdrop of 1991 LA, Ayorinde draws from personal experiences, having lived in the Bay Area of California in the late ’90s.

“I remember the era’s vibe, and it’s not that far removed from me,” she remarked. “The authenticity of the show, grounded in historical truth, captures the bittersweet nostalgia of that time.”

When asked about the essence of horror, Ayorinde emphasized the importance of a compelling narrative. “Horror must be rooted in a good story,” she said. “The real terror often stems from elements grounded in truth, whether supernatural entities or the horrors inflicted by real people.”

Actors Luke James (The Chi), Wayne Knight (Seinfeld), Pam Grier (Jackie Brown), and Joshua J. Williams (Mudbound) join Ayorinde in the ensemble cast.

“Them: The Scare” will premiere in its entirety on Thursday, April 25th.
