*Shaunie Henderson reacted to a quote from her newly released book, “UNDEFEATED: Changing the Rules and Winning on My Own Terms,” that she feels was “taken out of context.”
As we reported previously, in the book, Henderson admits to being more infatuated with the lifestyle of her ex-husband, NBA star Shaquille O’Neal, and the concept of marriage than with him as an individual.
As PEOPLE reports, O’Neal and Henderson wed in 2002 before calling it quits in 2009 due to Shaq’s alleged infidelity. They share four children together.
“Looking back, I don’t know that I was ever really in love with the man, but I was in love with the idea of being married to the man I had a family with,” Henderson wrote, per Essence.
“I was in love with the idea of building a life together. I truly did enjoy spending time with him. [NBA] road trips allowed me to be with my husband and experience the NBA life for a little while,” she continued.

Shaq took to Instagram on May 8 to respond to Henderson.
“I understand…I wouldn’t have been in love with me either. Wishing you all the best. All love, Shaq,” he wrote. Shaq captioned the post, “Trust me I get it.”
Henderson released a statement to PEOPLE amid criticism over her remarks about Shaq.
“My book is my truth, and when I was talking to my friend yesterday, I was like, developing an opinion and a comment from content with no context will show you a lot of people’s intelligence and unintelligence, right?” she explained.
“There was no context to just that one quote that I said, and I think that sadly, people are taking my words out of context. I’m not a word girl. I’m a character girl, and since I’ve left the marriage of Shaquille, my character has spoken for itself.”
Shaunie said she doesn’t know why Shaq responded on social media but noted, “… it’s my book, my truth, and it’s my legacy.”
