*Kristen Adele Calhoun’s new play Black Cypress Bayou opens at The Geffen Playhouse for the world premiere. Ms. Calhoun is the recipient of the Edgerton Foundation New Play Award and thanks to the Geffen Playhouse, Los Angeles audiences are the first to witness this layered drama about a Texas matriarch, her daughters, and the secrets revealed on a hot summer night. Black Cypress Bayou stars Kimberly Scott as Vernita Manifold, Amber Chardae Robinson as Taysha Hunter, Brandee Evans as Ladybird Manifold, and Angela Lewis as RaeMeka Manifold-Baler.
Tiffany Nichole Greene is the director of the Black Cypress Bayou world premiere at The Geffen. Academy Award winner Tarell Alvin McCraney (Moonlight) is the Artistic Director and Gil Cates, Jr. is the Executive Director and CEO of The Geffen Playhouse. The theatre has mounted a sincere and consorted effort to continue to produce and promote innovative storytelling and an elevated campaign for community engagement that is reflective on stage, behind the scenes, and for the audience whose stories are reflected.
