The Pulse of Entertainment: New Album ‘Donald Lawrence Presents Power: A Tribute to Twinkie Clark’ | LISTEN

*“I want to take them back in time,” said Grammy-winning Donald Lawrence about his new project “Donald Lawrence Presents Power: A Tribute to Twinkie Clark” (Verity/Provident/Sony Music). “To introduce the songs to a new generation.”

The 15-time Stellar Award winner is honoring the songwriting of Twinkie Clark who was instrumental in building the Contemporary Gospel genre of today.  To help Donald present some of Twinkie’s best hits he enlisted the vocal help of Yolanda Adams, J Moss, PJ Morton, Kierra Sheard, The Clark Sisters, Shirley Murdock, Sir The Baptist, Jakalyn Carr, Donald Lawrence & Company, and Kelontae Gavin. Lawrence is a legend in the Contemporary Gospel genre as a recording artist, music producer, songwriter, and music director. He was the music director of the movie The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel and produced its soundtrack.

“I got the idea after I did the music for The Clark Sisters movie. I had reimagined the songs,” Donald told me of the eight songs featured on the album “Donald Lawrence Presents Power: A Tribute to Twinkie Clark.”

The songs Lawrence reimagined on the new album were from Twinkie’s solo album “Ye Shall Receive Power” from 1981.

“This particular album I am reimagining the album (…’Power’) from scratch,” he added. “When I listened to it….you know it’s special. When I heard ‘Fix Me Jesus’ (featuring Sir The Baptist, Jason Ferdinand, and The Jason Ferdinand Singers) and when I heard ‘Awake O’ Zion’ (featuring J Moss and Daniel Weatherspoon) I was like ‘Wow!’ The originals were great but what I heard was wow.”

The “Awake O’Zion” single is accompanied by a lyric music video. The titled track of Twinkie Clark’s “…Power” album, on Donald Lawrence’s new album, features The Clark Sisters and Mr. Talkbox. On the “My Soul Loves Jesus” song Donald features Shirley Murdock, Kierra Sheard, Jekalyn Carr, and Kelontae Gavin. PJ Morton (Maroon 5) is featured on the Donald Lawrence song “Praise the Lord”. Yolanda Adams, Lawrence’s labelmate, is featured on the single for the album titled “In Him, There is No Sorrow.”

The 15-time Grammy-nominated artist also extends his music to the R&B genre, collaborating with Stephanie Mills, Mary J. Blige, and En Vogue. He has also collaborated with Bebe Winans, Tasha Cobb Leonard and Kirk Franklin. His skill for developing artists includes his groups, Donald Lawrence & Company (“There Is a King in You”) and The Tri-City Singers and Company (“Encourage Yourself” and “The Gift”).
