Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg: ‘I Wholeheartedly Support Reparations’ | Video

*Sacramento Democratic Mayor Darrell Steinberg was among the speakers Saturday for the second in-person meeting held by California’s reparations task force

As Fox Business reports, members of the public were allowed to weigh in on a proposed reparations program for descendants of Black slaves. The state legislature is considering whether to support cash payments to Foundational Black Americans, or grants of land or other compensation.

“I wholeheartedly support reparations and think everyone should,” Steinberg told the task force.

“If government should stand for anything, it should stand for investing in communities and people who have been the victims of discrimination and disenfranchisement for far too long,” he said.

As we reported previously, the task force, formed by Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2020 to study reparations proposals, met on December 14 and 15 for their final public meetings of 2022. The committee previously approved the first step of a proposal to compensate descendants of slaves for up to $223,000. A final proposal will be announced in early 2023.

One proposal is to give every Black citizen in the state a $360,000 check. There are approximately 1.8 million African-Americans living in California, per Fox Business. To qualify for a reparations payout, one has to prove their lineage either via a DNA website.

“If California can admit its sins and change the narrative, then there is a way forward for states and cities across the nation,” said California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, who authored the bill creating the task force, per Fox Business.

Meanwhile, Kamilah V. Moore, the chairman of the California Reparations Task Force, is calling for the creation of a Bureau of African American Affairs award of up to $223,000 to every descendant of African slaves.

“The task force decided in March that the community of eligibility would be lineage-based rather than race-based,” she previously said.
