*Kamilah V. Moore, the chairman of the California Reparations Task Force, is demanding the creation of a Bureau of African American Affairs to award up to $223,000 to every descendant of African slaves.
The task force, formed by Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2020 to study reparations proposals, met on December 14 and 15 for their final public meetings of 2022. The committee previously approved the first step of a proposal to compensate descendants of slaves for up to $223,000. A final proposal will be announced in early 2023.
Moore has also clarified that it is not true every person in a Black family is entitled to the $223,000 to make up for past housing discrimination.
She said $223,000 is the “maximum” amount those who qualify will receive, and it will only target the Californians who suffered housing discrimination in California between 1933 and 1977. One has to prove they suffered housing discrimination and also prove their lineage either via Ancestry.com or other DNA websites. Over 2.5M Californians (6.5%) identify as Black or African American.

Kamilah V. Moore further said the cash payouts are not only for Black people but other eligible races as well.
“The task force decided in March that the community of eligibility would be lineage-based rather than race-based,” she said. Her clarification confirmed the report that whites and Hispanics will also be eligible for up to $223,000 per person. This has not sat well with some critics who feel the real victims were the Black community. But Moore thinks otherwise.
“When you really look at who was really impacted by housing discrimination during that particular time period it most likely won’t be all Black folks,” she said.
Previously in an interview on Spectrum News, she revealed her plans to demand the creation of the Bureau of African American Affairs to deal with the payments. The bureau will be just like the Bureau of Indian Affairs for Native Americans.
