*R. Kelly is taking legal action against the federal government, alleging his personal details were leaked by U.S. Bureau of Prisons staff during his stint at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago.

Fox 32 reports that Kelly accuses numerous prison officers of leaking his private information.

“He is a Grammy-award winning recording artist and a nationally recognized celebrity. As with all prisoners, but particularly because of Plaintiff’s status, the United States of America, through the BOP (Bureau of Prisons), had a duty to protect Plaintiff and his private and sensitive information to ensure that its employees did not exploit Plaintiff for financial gain or for any other reason … at least 60 BOP officers made unauthorized access to Plaintiff’s sensitive, confidential, and private information … Some of those BOP officers either shared and/or sold that information to third parties including members of the media and witnesses in Plaintiff’s criminal prosecution,” according to the lawsuit.

“He had every right to be able to be confident, to think the BOP would protect his information and not exploit, but unfortunately, certain BOP officers did just that,” said Kelly’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, ABC 7 Chicago reports.

The new lawsuit against the federal government and the Bureau of Prisons also names popular YouTube blogger LaTasha Kebe (AKA Tasha K), who is said to have obtained Kelly’s personal information during his sex crimes trial in Chicago. According to the suit, the leak impacted the singer’s ability to defend himself.

The complaint accuses Tasha K, who was sued by Cardi B for defamation in 2022, of rallying “her massive following to harass the plaintiff with the use of the stolen information and created chaos in the plaintiff’s personal life.”

“He does not feel comfortable to this day talking to anyone, even his own lawyers, because of the impact of this event,” Bonjean said.

The lawsuit claims “at least 60 BOP officers made unauthorized access to plaintiff’s sensitive, confidential, and private information maintained by the BOP.”

“You’re listening to personal phone calls. You’re listening to recordings. That’s not right. That’s not right. That doesn’t sit well with me at all,” said R. Kelly’s sister, Lisa Kelly, in an interview with ABC7.

“If they do it to him, they could do it to someone else. It’s time for change in our judicial system. It’s just time for change,” said sister Cassandra Kelly.

“Mr. Kelly must now bring this lawsuit to get answers and justice, because despite opening an investigation into the serious misconduct, the DOJ ultimately declined to indict the wrongdoers and allowed the misconduct to continue,” the Bonjean Law Group said in a statement to HuffPost, per Fox 32 Chicago.

R. Kelly was convicted of racketeering and sex trafficking charges in New York City in 2021; the following year, a Chicago jury convicted him of child pornography charges. Overall, he was sentenced to more than 30 years in prison. Kellz is appealing both convictions.
