More than likely if you’re an old school had, the title, “Bounce, Rock, Skate” will immediately make you think of the late 70s roller skating classic of the almost same title (“Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll“) by Vaughan Mason. But nope, even though Paul Wall’s “Bounce” has a vibe from back in the day, it’s totally different. And of course, he’s rapping and not singing. Check it via the player up top.
Produced by Big Swift, “Bounce, Rock, Skate” is a velvety dedication to Houston’s beloved “slabs” – old-school cars decked out in opulence – and the debonair players who drive them. Paul Wall and Bun B take turns offering their first-hand perspective of the subculture of “slab riders” like only true O.G.s can, while Chalie Boy’s smoky, sultry vocals infuse the track with speakeasy vibes, evoking a secret community where certain facts are understood despite being left unspoken. An esteemed figure in Texas hip-hop, Paul Wall is known most for his equally affable and boastful rhymes delivered with a thick drawl best suited for the syrupy rhythms he favors. The rapper entered the 2020s as a bona fide Houston hip-hop veteran and continued his prolific release rate. Mind Over Matter and Subculture, Wall’s 11th and 12th solo studio albums, both landed in 2020, as did Slab Talk, co-billed to Lil’ Keke. Chalie Boy is a Southern rapper and singer from Central Texas who made his major label debut in 2009 with the breakout hit single “I Look Good.” The song was first popular on radio stations in Houston and Dallas before garnering national airplay. As the song became a breakout hit, a remix was released featuring established fellow Southern rappers Bun B, Juvenile, and Slim Thug. In 2023, the song catapulted Chalie Boy back into the national spotlight when it was sampled to create singer Victoria Monet’s breakout single, “On My Mama.”
