*Legal experts say Jonathan Majors is not likely to get jail time after being found guilty Monday of assault and harassment of his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari during a domestic dispute.
The actor was convicted of third-degree reckless assault, a misdemeanor, and second-degree harassment, a violation, per The Hollywood Reporter. Majors was found not guilty of third-degree intentional assault and not guilty of second-degree aggravated harassment.
“Since it’s the defendant’s first conviction, although technically he faces one year of jail, the judge will 99 percent give him three years probation, anger management and possibly some community service,” said Cary London, a Manhattan-based civil rights and criminal defense attorney at Shulman & Hill, per THR.
Majors could spend up to a year in prison on the assault charge, but London said, “Mr. Majors is not getting jail time.”
Several supporters of the “Creed III” star have noted the peculiarity of a misdemeanor case such as this one going to trial, which London called “extremely rare.”
“Unlike in most misdemeanor cases, Majors was likely guided by the public and media perception of the charges against him and hoped that a public trial rather than a plea deal would clear his name,” said Los Angeles-based criminal defense attorney Kate Mangels, per THR.
“This is a case that normally would have been resolved without much fanfare or consequence that instead took on a life of its own, as is often the case,” said famed criminal defense lawyer Mark Geragos.
Meanwhile, the controversial case has dramatically impacted Majors’ film career. His acclaimed drama “Magazine Dreams” has been postponed indefinitely, and Marvel dropped him from the MCU.
Disney pulled “Magazine Dreams” after being set for release on Dec. 4. Directed by Elijah Bynum, the film won the U.S. Special Dramatic Jury Award and the audience’s hearts at Sundance in January. Majors received glowing praise for his “powerhouse” performance as Killian Maddox, a troubled man who dreams of bodybuilding superstardom.
We reported earlier that Marvel dropped Majors as Kang the Conqueror after he was set to play the supervillain in “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” which is slated to premiere in 2026.
He appeared as Kang in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” in Feb. 2023 and in the “Loki” series on Disney+.
Majors’ army recruiting ads were also shelved following Monday’s guilty verdict.
In a statement, his attorney implied that the actor intends to appeal, saying Majors “looks forward to fully clearing his name.”
Per THR, one legal expert said Majors “has nothing to lose by appealing other than continuing to keep the case in the news.”
Majors is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 6.
