*Cuba Gooding Jr. revealed in a prior interview that before director John Singleton passed away in 2019, the actor thanked him for launching his career.
“I was with John when he passed in the hospital, he was already in a coma when we got there,” Cuba told Too Fab. “But I got the opportunity to tell him that I love him, and to thank him for starting my career, and Omar Gooding’s career, my brother who was in ‘Baby Boy’.”
Singleton gave Gooding his breakout role as “Tre Styles,” in 1991’s “Boyz N’ The Hood,” for which Singleton won an academy award.
Gooding said the last time he saw Singleton in good health was one year prior to the hospital visit. At the time, he was performing in the musical, “Chicago.”

“He [Singleton] gave me a hug and kiss, and said ‘I didn’t know you could sing’,” Cuba recalled. “If I’d known that was my last time I would’ve held on a little longer.”
Singleton died after suffering a stroke in 2019 when he checked himself into Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A. for a leg problem. His mother, Sheila Ward, said at the time that he suffered from hypertension for years, and that is what likely triggered the stroke. He was 51.
It was originally reported that Singleton’s daughter Justice Singleton, 26, his eldest child, would be the recipient of his estate. Singleton wrote his will in 1993 when Justice was his only child. Since then he fathered 6 other children so his estate was reportedly divided into 7 equal parts.
