McDonald’s Announces Spicy Chicken McNuggets Coming to U.S. for Limited Time

Starting Sept. 16, Spicy Chicken McNuggets will be available at McDonald’s locations nationwide for a limited time, per PEOPLE. The hot nuggets will be breaded in spicy tempura coating of cayenne and chili pepper, according to a press release. It will also come with a new Mighty Hot Sauce.

“For those who care to dial up the heat, we’ve crafted our new Mighty Hot Sauce, boasting a powerful blend of crushed red peppers and spicy chilis. The new dipping sauce is both our first new sauce innovation since 2017 and the hottest one available at McDonald’s. Trust us – you’re going to want to take a dip,” the press release says.

“This is the first time we’ve introduced a new flavor of our classic Chicken McNuggets in the U.S. since they came to menus in 1983,” Linda VanGosen, Vice President of Menu Innovation, said in the release. “As our customers have been asking for Spicy McNuggets for some time now, we couldn’t think of a better time to bring them to our menus. We can’t wait for McNuggets fans to get a taste of these new spicy options.”

A new Chips Ahoy! McFlurry is also coming starting Sept. 16, only for a limited time. It features vanilla soft-serve ice cream, caramel topping and Chips Ahoy! cookie pieces.

The new menu items come weeks after McDonald’s announced that it is closing 200 U.S. locations due to the financial hit caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Here’s more from CNN:

McDonald’s total sales fell 30% in the second quarter compared to a year ago, the company said last month. Net income plummeted 68%.

And it is struggling during breakfast. The meal has been impacted by changes to people’s morning routines, particularly commuting, the company explained during an analyst call discussing the company’s second-quarter results. It doesn’t help that Wendy’s, which positioned its own new breakfast offerings as superior to McDonald’s offerings, is benefiting from its breakfast menu.
