“Dolemite Is My Name“ follows Moore as a down-on-his-luck record store manager who self-produced and distributed a string of raunchy party comedy albums and eventually created the independently produced hit film “Dolemite” in 1975.
The new Netflix film boasts an incredibly funny cast that features Keegan-Michael Key as activist-playwright and (original) “Dolemite” screenwriter Jerry Jones; Wesley Snipes in a hilarious comedic performance as blaxploitation actor D’Urville Martin. There’s also Tituss Burgess, Craig Robinson, and Mike Epps as Moore’s close friends and business consultants.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph plays Lady Reed, a heartbroken woman who catches her husband cheating in a club Moore was performing in. Her life is changed when he (Moore) invites her to go on tour and becomes his co-star and another source of support.
Snoop Dogg has a small role as a radio DJ who works with Moore and comedian/actress Luenelle has a role as Moore’s Aunt who he taps for a loan to get his comedy business off the ground.
The premiere took place Saturday night (09-28-19) at Westwood’s Regency Theater. An elaborate carpet was put together with replicas of iconic spots around Los Angeles that were key in Moore’s career. The O’Jays were also present and performed two of their signature classics: “For the Love of Money” and “Love Train.”
EURweb’s Jill Munroe spoke with Murphy, Snipes, Key, Robinson and more.
Murphy had this to say about his return to the screen.
“It feels good to be doing some funny stuff. You know I got a nice little rest and I got some funny things lined up and that’s a good feeling.”
Wesley Snipes shared his excitement at working with Murphy for the first time and showing off a comedic side. He also gave details into his character in the upcoming “Coming to America 2.”
“I waited 30 years and now I get to rock with him twice within 12 months.”
Dolemite is My Name was written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski and directed by Craig Brewer. It has a limited theatre run begin October 4 and then will be available on Netflix 25.
