*A newly married man has sparked online backlash after sharing a tense disagreement with his wife over a bathroom routine he says he cannot accept.
Per the New York Post, the man detailed the situation in a Reddit post that quickly gained attention, with many readers weighing in on whether his reaction crossed a line. The conflict emerged after the couple moved in together following their wedding.
In his post, the man explained that the issue surfaced shortly after they began sharing a home. “My wife and I recently got married and moved in together. She has a bathroom habit that really irks me,” he wrote. He said the habit involves intentionally not flushing the toilet after every use.
His wife avoids flushing to reduce water consumption. “She likes to leave pee in the toilet and not flush each time to ‘conserve water,’” he added. He noted that the unflushed toilet caused the bathroom to smell like “p—.”

The disagreement escalated when the situation occurred during her menstrual cycle, which he described as his breaking point. In frustration, he lashed out. “I don’t care about saving a penny on a gallon of water, you’re disgusting, you need to start flushing EVERY TIME,” he recalled saying to her.
His wife stopped speaking to him after the confrontation. “I can’t help but feel like I did something wrong, but looking back, I feel it was justified,” he wrote.
“She apparently hid this habit from me. We lived together for a year, and she never did this, and now it comes out all of a sudden,” he explained.
Beyond the relationship dispute, hygiene experts have noted that flushing practices can affect cleanliness. Studies suggest that flushing with the toilet lid closed can significantly reduce the spread of microscopic droplets into the air. These tiny particles, which are invisible to the eye, may carry bacteria such as E. coli and linger in the surrounding space, potentially increasing the risk of contamination.
