*Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell is trading the football field for a potential return to the political arena. The 2 Live Crew legend revealed Monday he’s resigning from his head coaching position at Miami Edison Senior High School to explore a congressional campaign in Florida.
Campbell, 60, shared the news through a statement on his X account. “Good morning. I am officially stepping down as Head Football Coach at Miami Edison Senior High School,” he wrote, acknowledging the team and staff who supported his coaching journey, Vibe reports.
The hip-hop legend said he chose to step away because he did not want his coaching responsibilities to conflict with his pursuit of public office. “I do not want to shortchange the young men at Miami Edison while pursuing a congressional seat,” Campbell stated.
If Campbell moves forward with his campaign, he would face Democratic incumbent Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick in Florida’s 20th Congressional District.

We reported earlier that the Miami-based artist revealed his potential congressional run in a March 2025 interview with The Bulwark. Uncle Luke will formally decide his candidacy by Florida’s April 26 qualifying deadline. He expressed his belief in having “the opportunity to bring something back to the community.”
“And I get to fight these mother*******,” Campbell told the publication, noting that he was referring to “Matt Gaetz, Donald Trump, and all these crazy-a** Republicans who want to divide us.”
Campbell is not new to running for public office; he previously ran for mayor of Miami-Dade County in 2011, finishing fourth with 11 percent of the vote.
