Baron Corbin defeated Williams at SummerSlam on Aug. 2, ending a reign that had recently received a major presentation upgrade. Just weeks earlier, Williams unveiled a white-fur version of the championship belt on the July 10 edition of “SmackDown.” According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, the idea of removing the title from Williams developed much later than the custom belt itself.

“We’re told the decision to move the title to Baron Corbin came together only recently,” the report stated, according to Ring Side News.

That timing made the outcome more surprising inside WWE because the company had already committed resources to the personalized design. Replica versions had also reached WWE’s merchandise operation, suggesting Williams’ championship presentation was expected to remain relevant beyond a few weeks.

“I don’t think you can handcuff your booking and creative based on the fact that there are replica titles made in a certain form or fashion,” he said.

Corbin’s win may still be part of a broader program involving Williams rather than a complete change in direction. One theory raised during the discussion is that Corbin could continue using Williams’ customized championship as part of the feud. That would give the belt a storyline purpose even after the title change.

A future rematch could also put Williams back in contention.
