*At just 9 months old, a toddler captured the internet’s heart with her unexpected Spanish vocabulary, learned from her daycare teachers, as shared by her mother, Ebony B., in a viral TikTok video.
“I started noticing, around 9 months, she was saying ‘agua’ instead of water,” Ebony tells PEOPLE. “And to this day she still calls water ‘agua.’ ” The video, a candid snapshot of her daughter following her teacher’s Spanish instructions, resonated widely online.
The toddler’s daycare environment, rich with linguistic diversity, fueled her growing vocabulary. One teacher spoke mostly Portuguese, while another used almost exclusively Spanish. “Then she moved to a different classroom, and the teacher only speaks Spanish, like very little English,” Ebony explains.

Ebony’s daughter seamlessly blends Spanish into her English-speaking home, creating moments of both humor and awe. “Sometimes she’ll say a sentence to us and we have no clue what she’s saying, and we’re like, she’s probably speaking Spanish and we just don’t know,” Ebony admits. “She’s acknowledging what her teacher is saying and doing what she’s telling her to do in Spanish, which we thought was awesome.”
Inspired by their daughter, Ebony’s family embraced the challenge of keeping up. Her husband downloaded Duolingo to learn Spanish, motivated by their toddler’s fluency. “It’s kind of just because we’re like, she’s fully understanding Spanish, like we need to learn,” Ebony says. “I definitely feel like she’s more intelligent, definitely more curious.”
The viral TikTok, a simple “day-in-the-life” clip, showcased the toddler’s skills and drew widespread admiration. “I just happened to catch that moment on video, and the response was amazing,” Ebony says. “Her teachers take such great care of her; they love her, and I love that they don’t exclude her.”
The overwhelming support online has reinforced Ebony’s pride in her daughter’s abilities. “Luckily everyone’s been really sweet and supportive, and they’re excited for how much she can learn.”
