*Tina Knowles reflects on her tumultuous love life with newfound peace and clarity in her memoir, “Matriarch,” where she shares deeply personal stories of love, heartbreak, and betrayal during her marriage to Mathew Knowles.
The 71-year-old mother of Beyoncé and Solange opens up about her often painful relationship with the music manager, marked by repeated infidelity. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, she discussed how those experiences, and the healing that followed, helped define the woman she is today.
“When I went into writing the book, it was very carefully written at first,” Tina admits. “But then it was like, this doesn’t even make sense because there’s only, you know, all the positive stuff.” Despite her initial reservations, she ultimately chose to share the painful truths about her marriage.
Tina and Mathew Knowles married in 1980, but their relationship faced challenges from the start. In her memoir, Tina shares that she struggled early on to cope with Mathew’s unfaithfulness, even as she remained deeply in love with him.
“But the suspicions I had would get washed away by the fact that our love was stronger than a misstep,” she says. However, by the time she was pregnant with Solange, the marriage was falling apart. Her breaking point came in 2009 when she discovered through the media that Mathew had fathered a child outside of their marriage.

“I screamed, ‘Get out! Get out!’ like he was some demon. ‘I hate you!’ … my world had exploded.” The couple divorced in 2011 after 31 years of marriage.
Tina admits to feeling like a failure after the divorce, but over time, she found freedom and began prioritizing her healing.
“In the early days I was very bad at balance,” she says, but by her 50s, and especially after her divorce at 59, Tina made self-care and healing her focus.
She married actor Richard Lawson in 2015, but their relationship ended in 2023. Reflecting on her journey, Tina calls it a “rollercoaster” but one filled with both hardship and immense joy. “It’s been an amazing ride. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.”
