*The 98th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 15, 2026, was a night of dizzying highs and dramatic lows for multi-hyphenate star Teyana Taylor. While her film, Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” dominated the ceremony with a staggering six wins, including Best Picture, Taylor found herself at the center of a post-show controversy after a physical altercation with a security guard.
The Incident: “Do Not Touch Me”
The drama unfolded immediately after the broadcast ended. As the cast and crew of One Battle After Another attempted to return to the stage for a celebratory group photo, Taylor was blocked by a security guard from an outside firm, Security Industry Specialists (SIS).
In a viral video circulating on social media, Taylor is visibly upset, repeatedly calling the guard “very rude.” She alleges the guard put his hands on her to prevent her from ascending the stairs.
“You’re a man putting your hands on a female! Do not touch me. Do not shove me. Do not push me,” she is heard exclaiming in the footage. Bystanders appeared to side with the nominee, with one person heard saying the guard’s behavior was “uncalled for.”
Official Responses and Taylor’s Reaction
The next day, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued a statement addressing the incident. While clarifying that the guard was employed by an outside vendor, the Academy made its position clear, stating such behavior is “not acceptable.” They thanked Taylor for her “remarkable grace” and confirmed they were taking measures to prevent a recurrence.
The security firm, SIS, also responded, acknowledging the incident. In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, they expressed regret that the situation escalated, attributing it to “incidental contact” during a crowded moment. They admitted that the interaction “did not meet the standards of professionalism we expect from our team” and that the matter had been addressed internally.
Later that night, Taylor spoke with TMZ, downplaying the drama while standing her ground.
“Everybody’s having a good time, and you know, security was just doing a lot,” she said. “I’m proud, I’m happy… at the end of the day, I just don’t tolerate disrespect — especially when it’s unwarranted and unprovoked.”
A Night of Celebration Before the Confrontation
The confrontation was a stark contrast to the infectious joy Taylor displayed throughout the evening. Although she lost the Best Supporting Actress award to Amy Madigan for “Weapons,” Taylor was seen enthusiastically cheering for the winner. Her most memorable moment, however, came during the Best Picture win.
As the cast took the stage, Taylor playfully put director Paul Thomas Anderson in a headlock, a moment that instantly went viral and captured the celebratory spirit of the night. Speaking to Variety afterwards, Taylor revealed it was an inside joke. “He already knew the headlock was coming!” she laughed. Watch it happen via the X/Twitter video below.
In the end, Taylor’s night encapsulated the emotional rollercoaster of the Oscars: professional disappointment, personal triumph with her film’s big win, and a public defense of her personal boundaries. Despite the backstage drama, she emerged as one of the night’s most talked-about stars.
