*The 98th Academy Awards delivered one of the most competitive and celebratory nights in recent memory, filled with historic wins, emotional speeches, and a reminder of just how strong the past year of filmmaking has been.
One of the evening’s most groundbreaking moments came when cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history by becoming the first woman to win the Oscar for Best Cinematography. Her win marked a powerful step forward for representation behind the camera and highlighted the evolution of the film industry, where more women are finally receiving recognition for their technical artistry.
“Just being on stage getting this award for a movie like that (Sinners) will change so many girls’ lives because they’ll be inspired when they weren’t before,” said Autumn Durald Arkapaw during her interview in the Oscars press room.
Another standout moment belonged to filmmaker Ryan Coogler, who took home his first Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Sinners. Coogler had previously earned nominations for his work connected to Black Panther, but this win solidified his place among Hollywood’s most respected storytellers. Sinners also continued its strong showing during the night by winning Best Original Score, further cementing the film’s creative impact.

Perhaps the most celebrated win of the night came when Michael B. Jordan earned the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the now infamous Smoke/Stack twins in Sinners. The victory felt long overdue for the actor, whose career has been filled with acclaimed performances. His win was met with loud applause and marked a defining milestone in his career.
“I’m just walking my path and just trying to be locked in. Dream big, and be kind, be honest. I’m really big on pouring into the universe, and the universe is going to pour back into you,” Michael B Jordan told EURweb and other media outlets on his career journey in the Oscars press room.
Despite its multiple wins, Sinners did not take home the evening’s biggest prize. Best Picture ultimately went to One Battle After Another. A film that stood out in what many critics and audiences agreed was one of the most stacked Best Picture lineups in years. Other contenders such as Hamnet, Begonia, Sinners, and F1 showcased the incredible variety and storytelling strength this year.
Even in the acting categories, competition was fierce. Many viewers hoped to see Delroy Lindo take home Best Supporting Actor, but the award ultimately went to Sean Penn.
Still, the night had plenty of silver linings. Actress Teyana Taylor can now add “Oscar winner” to her résumé thanks to her role in the Best Picture–winning One Battle After Another.
From historic milestones to hard-fought victories, the 98th Oscars proved to be a night that celebrated the power of storytelling. While some favorites didn’t take every prize, the ceremony ultimately reflected a year of exceptional filmmaking and unforgettable performances.
