*Teyana Taylor is having a moment that refuses to slow down, and BET is taking notice. The network has named the Harlem-born entertainer its Icon of the Year honoree for the 2026 BET Awards. Culture’s Biggest Night broadcasts live June 28 at 8 PM ET/PT from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with comedian Druski serving as host.
The Icon of the Year Award is reserved for the artist whose fingerprints are all over the current cultural conversation, according to the news release. BET EVP of Specials, Music Programming and Music Strategy Connie Orlando put it plainly: “She doesn’t ask for a seat at the table; she builds the table, designs the rooms, and sets the tone for everyone who walks in.”
Taylor’s path to this recognition spans nearly two decades of reinvention. She broke through with her 2014 debut “VII” and built a catalog that includes the Gold-certified “K.T.S.E.,” the Top 10 “The Album,” and multiplatinum singles “Gonna Love Me” and “Issues/Hold On.” Her collaborative credits read like a who’s who, with recorded work alongside Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliott, Erykah Badu, and Elton John.

The past five years, however, represent a creative stretch that few artists in any lane could match. Taylor took home a Critics’ Choice Award for her performance in “A Thousand and One,” then followed it with a 2026 Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and an Academy Award nomination for her role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another.” She also appeared opposite Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in “The Rip” and joined the ensemble of Ryan Murphy’s “All’s Fair.”
Music remained central throughout. Her visual album “Escape Room” landed a 2026 Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album, adding yet another chapter to a story still very much in progress.
Additional performers, presenters, and honorees for the 2026 BET Awards will be announced in the coming weeks.
