*Tasia Fortune’s mother is publicly challenging any suggestion that her daughter took her own life as investigators continue working to determine how the 29-year-old died.
Fortune, a Black mother of four, was found hanging from a tree in Jackson, Mississippi, on Aug. 3.
“She did not do this to herself,” her mother, Christy Spivey, told ABC News. “I know my daughter and she did not do this to herself.”
Spivey said she had seen Fortune just over a week earlier, when her daughter traveled from Mississippi to Kentucky for a family reunion on July 26. Her recollection of that visit is one reason she remains skeptical of suicide.

“She was better than I had seen her in a long time,” Spivey said. “She was at peace.”
No official ruling has been announced on Fortune’s cause or manner of death.
The Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an autopsy, while Jackson police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. Authorities have not announced any arrests or publicly named a person of interest.
Calls for additional scrutiny have now extended beyond the local investigation.
Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes sent a letter to U.S. Attorney Baxter Kruger’s office asking federal authorities to assist with the case.
Fortune’s family, meanwhile, is preparing for her burial while waiting for answers.
“This has just devastated us,” Spivey said. “Tasia was strong-minded, she was full of laughs and love, she had faith in God … She had so little and gave so much.”
Her aunt, Etta Avolio, created an online fundraiser to help cover funeral and burial costs. She described Fortune as a “strong-minded, big-hearted, vibrant young woman.”
The family has also said it believes “justice will be served” as the investigation moves forward.
For now, the central question remains unanswered: whether Fortune’s death was self-inflicted or involved another person. Spivey has made clear where she stands while authorities await the medical examiner’s findings.
