*Grammy®-nominated spoken word artist Sekou Andrews (pronounced SAY-koo) is re-introducing his 2025 album, KOUMAMI, a project he believes carries a message that deeply resonates in today’s climate.
Known for his 2019 album, Sekou Andrews & The String Theory, which was nominated in the “Best Spoken Word Album” Grammy® category, Sekou became the first spoken word poet nominated in over 12 years.
He has also been recognized by cultural icons such as Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones, and has delivered powerful performances on stages, including 11 TED Talks.
With KOUMAMI, he offers a bold yet heartfelt exploration of human connection, courage, and authentic expression.
“KOUMAMI feels more relevant than ever,” Sekou says. “I hope it can provide moments of reflection, encouragement, and inspiration. I’m proud of this work, but more than that, I’m grateful to share it again, knowing it may touch people in meaningful ways.”

The album features 13 transformative tracks and collaborations with acclaimed artists, including Omari Hardwick, Jordin Sparks, LION BABE, Matt B, Celeste Prince, and more.
It seamlessly blends afrobeat, soul, hip-hop, alternative, electronica, and orchestral arrangements, creating an immersive listening experience that highlights the evolving possibilities of spoken word within music.
Tracks such as “The Fortune Teller” and “The Lightning Machine” showcase Sekou’s signature poetic storytelling, while “The Chosen One” Acts 1–3, featuring LION BABE and Celeste Prince, take listeners on a deeply emotional journey.
Songs like “Love Don’t Care,” featuring Omari Hardwick and Jordin Sparks, and “A Love Poem Called I Hate,” featuring Matt B, demonstrate the creative fusion of spoken word with music, emotion, and collaboration in both heartfelt and hilarious ways.
Sekou’s performances have inspired audiences, including President Obama and the late Maya Angelou, and have taken place on global stages and corporate platforms such as TED Talks, Google, and Nike.
He also created a category of public speaking he calls “Poetic Voice,” blending inspirational speaking seamlessly with spoken word poetry to create deeply human connections and leave audiences energized and empowered.
Sekou adds, “This album was created to remind us that even in challenging times, our voices matter. Poetry and music can spark courage, connection, and hope, and KOUMAMI is my invitation for people to live more boldly, authentically, and be unafraid to create their own flavor in life.”
