*Angela Bassett shared her delight over Teyana Taylor’s homage to her 1995 film “Waiting to Exhale” ahead of Taylor’s hosting debut on “Saturday Night Live.” The two-time Oscar nominee wrote on social media, “I love this sooo sooo much!!!! You got me GOOD! xoAng.”
The promo reimagines Bassett’s famous “crash out” scene, in which her character Bernadine reacts to a betrayal. In the clip, cast member Ashley Padilla tells Taylor that Andrew Dismukes ate her saved eggplant parmesan. Taylor channels Bernadine’s fury, storming into Dismukes’ dressing room, removing items from the walls, and setting some belongings on fire. She exclaims, “You don’t deserve this, Bernadine!”
The recreated scene mirrors Bernadine’s iconic moment, when she hauls her husband’s possessions outside and sets them and his car ablaze to reclaim her independence. Watch the SNL clip below.
“Waiting to Exhale,” based on Terry McMillan’s 1992 novel, also starred Loretta Devine, Lela Rochon, and the late Whitney Houston.
The romantic comedy-drama debuted at number one at the North American box office in 1995, earning $14.1 million in its opening weekend. The film went on to gross $67.05 million domestically and $14.4 million internationally, bringing its total worldwide earnings to $81.45 million.
Taylor, recently nominated for an Oscar for “One Battle After Another,” currently stars alongside Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in “The Rip.” She will host SNL this weekend, with Geese as the musical guest.
“Saturday Night Live” airs live on NBC at 11:30 p.m. ET / 8:30 p.m. PT.
