*R. Kelly’s daughter Buku Abi will reveal a “heartbreaking secret” in a forthcoming TVEI documentary.
Vibe reports that the project titled “R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey” will see Abi “bravely reveals a heartbreaking secret that shattered her childhood” and the doc “pulls back the curtain on the dark reality of growing up in the shadow of one of music’s most notorious figures.”
The documentary is set to air on the TVEI streaming platform on Oct. 11 and will feature interviews with Abi, her mother Drea Kelly and the disgraced singer’s son Robert Kelly Jr. Watch the trailer below.
In the promotional clip, Abi says, “For a long time, I didn’t even want to believe that it happened. I didn’t know that even if he was a bad person that he would do something to me. I really feel like that one millisecond completely just changed my whole life. Nobody wants to be the child of the father that is out here hurting women and children.”
Drea adds, “What he did to me, he did to me, but you didn’t have to do it to my kids.”
Meanwhile, we reported earlier via CNN that R. Kelly – who is currently serving a more than 30-year prison sentence in North Carolina – is asking the Supreme Court to hear an appeal of his federal sex crimes convictions.
The disgraced R&B singer’s defense attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, has filed a petition to the US Supreme Court, requesting to throw out his Chicago conviction for possession of child pornography and enticing minors to engage in sexual activity, claiming that the charges should be barred by the statute of limitations.
R. Kelly was already serving a 30-year sentence for sex trafficking, stemming from his 2021 New York case, at the time he was convicted of child pornography in Chicago for which he was sentenced to 20 years in 2023. He is also appealing the New York conviction, though that case is not part of the high court petition.
In the petition, Bonjean argues that the musician was wrongly retroactively prosecuted under a federal law – the PROTECT Act – which passed in 2003 and made the statute of limitations indefinite for sex crimes with minors. Bonjean argues that the conduct for which R. Kelly was convicted occurred in the 1990s – before the law that expanded the statute of limitations passed.
