*Legendary R&B band Earth, Wind & Fire will be the next subject to be featured on Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s directorial project list. The Roots member announced he will be bringing the group’s story to the masses as the director of the project.
“Having been baptized in the Afrocentric joy river of this powerhouse unit, I’ve learned about them, I’ve learned about us & more importantly, I’ve learned and rediscovered myself in the process,” Thompson said in a statement. “I’m so excited to be part of the process of preserving their positive but VERY vulnerable and real story of Soul, Self & Struggle.”
Formed in Chicago by Maurice White in 1969, Earth, Wind & Fire has provided a slew of hits over the years from the promotion of love, joy, and positivity. That formula gave way to multi-platinum and award-winning success coming via classic material such as “September,” “Reasons,” “Shining Star,” “Fantasy” and “That’s the Way of the World,” among others.
In 2000, Earth, Wind & Fire was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, followed by an induction into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2010. Six years later in 2016, the collective received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
That same year, Earth, Wind & Fire tragically lost its founder when White died of complications from Parkinson’s disease at the age of 74.

Cassius Life reports that Questlove’s documentary will explore Earth, Wind & Fire’s rise to the top. The “Summer of Soul (…Or When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised)” Oscar winner has received the full support of White’s estate as well as surviving original band members Philip Bailey, Ralph Johnson, and Verdine White, Maurice’s brother, issued a joint statement in support of the project.
“We look forward to this in-depth journey of our band, and are so excited to have Questlove directing the documentary,” a joint statement from the trio read.
Questlove‘s involvement in the Earth, Wind & Fire documentary comes as he works on a documentary of another iconic musical act, Sly and the Family Stone.
The Earth, Wind & Fire documentary is expected to be released in 2025.
