*President Donald Trump announced that Attorney General Pam Bondi is stepping down, though sources familiar with the situation told NBC News she was effectively fired.
Trump framed her departure in favorable terms on Truth Social, writing, “We love Pam, and she will be transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future.” Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche was named acting attorney general.
Behind the scenes, Trump had grown increasingly frustrated with Bondi over what insiders described as her failure to fully carry out his priorities. A reported confrontation between the two took place at the White House, though specifics of the exchange have not been disclosed.
During her tenure, Bondi oversaw sweeping personnel changes at the Justice Department, with numerous attorneys and FBI agents removed from cases tied to Trump. She steered the department’s focus toward claims of federal agency “weaponization” and voter fraud investigations, but the DOJ encountered repeated setbacks in court. Efforts to pursue cases against political opponents, including probes into members of Congress, the Federal Reserve, and former officials such as James Comey, were largely blocked or dismissed.
Bondi also drew sharp criticism over her handling of files related to Jeffrey Epstein. White House chief of staff Susie Wiles said Bondi had “completely whiffed” on the matter. The fallout led to congressional subpoenas and the bipartisan passage of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, with survivors and lawmakers taking issue with what they saw as inconsistent redactions of sensitive material.
In a post on X, Bondi noted that she would be “moving to an important private sector role I am thrilled about, and where I will continue fighting for President Trump and this Administration.”
She added, “I remain eternally grateful for the trust that President Trump placed in me to Make America Safe Again.”
Blanche thanked the president in an X post, writing, “Pam Bondi led this Department with strength and conviction and I’m grateful for her leadership and friendship,” he said. “Thank you to President Trump for the trust and the opportunity to serve as Acting Attorney General. We will continue backing the blue, enforcing the law, and doing everything in our power to keep America safe.”
