*Trell Thomas‘ Black Excellence Brunch recently partnered with Shawn Finnie to celebrate its inaugural “To Be Celebrated” soiree!
During an intimate celebration full of Hollywood’s elite influencers, celebrities showed up to share their flowers and turn the spotlight onto the people in their lives who help them show up as their best. Emmy award-winning actress Niecy Nash, Emmy award-winning host and entrepreneur Tabitha Brown, and lifelong renowned actress Kyla Pratt, beamed with joy as they poured love and words of affirmation over people who are imperative to their careers.
During a chat with us, Nash celebrated her wife, Jessica Betts, and admitted that she pulled a “little bait and switch and made her think she was coming to say something about me, but really, I was coming to give her her flowers.”

The pair have been married since August 2020 and have equally supported one another in their respective careers. Betts, who is a singer/songwriter with her own successful career, sang a little snippet of her latest single “Catch Me” after doting on her wife. “I’m very happy and grateful, and thankful that today was about me being celebrated,” she shared.
Brown shared insight on the years-long relationship she’s built with her glam team. Makeup artist, Brandi King has worked with Brown, (affectionately known as “Tab”) for over ten years. Tab revealed that even before her big break she told King, “Just trust me. Believe me, I’m telling you it’s gonna come. I can feel it. God has shown me.”
Tab then turned her attention to hairstylist Shaylin Jones, who admits is the first person she trusted with “Donna,” (the moniker she assigned to her fabulous mane). The trio’s chemistry of laughter and joy made it apparent that their relationship extends far beyond the glamorous moments we see created on Tab.
It’s not often that we get to see a child actor transcend into a successful adult who is still conquering in Hollywood. Pratt points to her mother, Kecia Pratt as the reason she has been able to do so much.
“To me, Black excellence is being able to celebrate the people around you, that help you grow and help you through those days,” she shared.
