*McDonald’s has removed Quarter Pounders from menus in parts of 13 states, following a deadly E. coli outbreak linked to Quarter Pounders.
The outbreak has affected at least 49 people in 10 states, resulting in one death and 10 hospitalizations, prompting McDonald’s to pull the burger from locations including Colorado, Kansas, and Utah, and areas across the Midwest and West, Detroit News reports.
According to the FDA’s preliminary investigation, the contamination may have originated from raw slivered onions served on the Quarter Pounder. The other popular burgers use cooked, diced onions. Slivered onions also appear on one of McDonald’s breakfast items, but that sandwich is not sold in affected locations. McDonald’s is now seeking a new regional supplier for fresh onions.
The deadly E. coli outbreak occurred days after former President Donald Trump pretended to work a brief shift at a McDonald’s location in Feasterville-Trevose, Pennsylvania, where he served fires to pre-screened supporters. Most McDonald’s locations are independently owned and managed, and franchisees can host political figures without acquiring approval from the corporate office.

In an internal memo, McDonald’s noted that local law enforcement informed the franchise’s owner and operator, Derek Giacomantonio, that Trump wanted to visit and he accepted.
“He was proud to highlight how he and his team serve their local community and make delicious food, like our World-Famous French Fries,” the company said, per CNN. “Upon learning of the former President’s request, we approached it through the lens of one of our core values: we open our doors to everyone.”
McDonald’s also stated: “As we’ve seen, our brand has been a fixture of conversation this election cycle. While we’ve not sought this, it’s a testament to how much McDonald’s resonates with so many Americans. McDonald’s does not endorse candidates for elected office and that remains true in this race for the next President. We are not red or blue – we are golden.”
