*Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is setting the record straight after Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville falsely claimed to have recruited him to Texas Tech.
Tuberville, a former college football coach, reportedly made the assertion while speaking to President Donald Trump, who recently praised Mahomes, partly due to his wife Brittany Mahomes’ past social media support for Trump’s policies.
During a signing ceremony for an executive order banning transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports, Trump incorrectly credited Tuberville with being Mahomes’ college football coach.
“You know, [Tuberville’s] quarterback was named Mahomes. He was a great coach,” Trump said, The Daily Beast reports. “And I said, ‘How good was he?’ He said, ‘You don’t wanna know how good. He made me into a great coach.’ He’s a pretty good quarterback, right? Yeah, he was very good. And he’s a good guy, too.’”
However, Tuberville coached at Texas Tech from 2010 to 2012—two years before Mahomes joined the team in 2014.

On right-wing pundit Megyn Kelly’s show Thursday, Tuberville noted that he “never coached” Mahomes but rather recruited him to Texas Tech.
“I never even coached him,” Tuberville admitted. “I recruited him, and then I left and went to another school. But I’ve got to be very good friends with him. He’s not just a good athlete, he’s a very good example for a lot of our young youth across this country.”
He later shared a clip of his appearance on social media, writing, “Patrick Mahomes was one of the best players I ever had the opportunity to recruit and get to know.”
Mahomes clapped back at the claim in an interview with The Philadelphia Inquirer, simply stating, “He did not recruit me.”
The coach who recruited Mahomes was Kliff Kingsbury, who served as Texas Tech’s head coach from 2013 to 2018.
