*Luther Campbell is taking his next act to Washington.
The 65-year-old Miami figure, known as “Uncle Luke” of 2 Live Crew, announced he is running for Florida’s 20th Congressional District. According to the Miami Herald, he revealed during an appearance on WPLG Channel 10’s This Week in South Florida that he stepped down in January from his coaching position at Miami Edison High School to devote his attention to the campaign.
The district is currently represented by Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who has held the seat since 2022. She has pleaded not guilty to federal charges alleging she improperly kept $5 million in disaster relief funds. Campbell did not address her legal case directly during his interview, instead centering his message on what he described as unmet needs in the community.
He pointed to concerns about affordable housing and job access across the district, which stretches through parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties, including communities such as Lauderhill, Belle Glade and Riviera Beach, as well as sections of Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Campbell also said the area needs stronger federal advocacy as the Trump administration moves to end Temporary Protected Status protections for certain immigrant groups.
“This race” requires someone who can communicate across party lines, Campbell argued, saying he believes he can speak directly with figures like Marco Rubio and Donald Trump. Drawing from his experience working with Miami officials from both parties, he said progress often depends on direct conversations rather than partisan standoffs.
This marks Campbell’s second attempt at elected office. In 2011, he competed in a special election for Miami-Dade County mayor and captured nearly 11% of the vote. He said he opted not to challenge for the congressional seat in 2024 because he wanted more time to strengthen ties within the district.
Acknowledging his past, Campbell said voters are already familiar with his history — and with his community work — as he seeks to chart a new political path.
“Most people will get into a race, and they’ll say ‘Write down the 10 things you don’t want people to know about,’” Campbell said. “Well, the 10 things I don’t want people to know about, everybody already knows about. People know my history. At the same time, people know the things I’ve done in the community. They know the community outreach.”
