*The rhythmic pulse of Los Angeles is set to find a powerful new heartbeat. On the steps of City Hall, the Los Angeles Jazz Festival (LAJF) announced its historic debut, scheduled for August 2026. More than just a music series, the festival is envisioned as a transformative 25-day cultural and civic event, ambitiously aiming to become the world’s third-largest international jazz festival and the largest Black-owned jazz festival in history.
The announcement, made by LAJF Founder & CEO Martin Ludlow alongside Mayor Karen Bass, City Council members, and nearly a thousand community partners, also revealed a landmark partnership: Airbnb has been secured as the inaugural Title Sponsor.
“With the Los Angeles Jazz Festival, we are establishing a world-class festival that honors those historic human beings who gathered in Congo Square, New Orleans,” said Ludlow. “Through their ‘strange sound called Jasm,’ they have impacted the world to this day and beyond. We are ready to celebrate jazz as America’s classical music, drive significant regional economic activity, and champion social justice.”

The festival’s core mission is multi-faceted. It seeks to celebrate the African, African American, and Caribbean roots of jazz—America’s classical music—while acting as a major engine for regional tourism and a dedicated platform for minority- and women-owned businesses. With an expected draw of 250,000 attendees, its economic and cultural footprint is projected to be substantial.
Mayor Karen Bass framed the festival as a vital act of civic unity and storytelling. “As we prepare to welcome the world for upcoming major events, we are also determined to unite Los Angeles through community celebrations like the LA Jazz Festival,” she stated. “This will be a powerful and beautiful act of cultural storytelling, rooted in the African diaspora that is so important to LA’s history.”
The partnership with Airbnb underscores a shared vision for community-centric tourism. “Airbnb is proud to be the inaugural title sponsor,” said Justin Wesson, Airbnb’s Senior Public Policy Manager in California. “This festival reflects the kind of tourism we believe in: one that brings people into neighborhoods, supports local and community-owned businesses, and keeps culture rooted where it belongs.”
A 25-Day Tapestry of Sound and Culture
The LA Jazz Festival is designed as a citywide immersion, building towards a spectacular climax:
-
Jazz on the Beach: The festival culminates on August 22-23 with a massive closing weekend on the sand at Dockweiler Beach, featuring world-class artists and expecting 40,000 attendees daily.
-
Caribbean Street Festival: A vibrant, multi-cultural block party in Downtown El Segundo with four distinct stages representing Cuba, Brazil, New Orleans, and the broader Afro-Caribbean tradition.
-
Jazz in the Park: 25 free concerts spread across Los Angeles, including parks in all 15 council districts, ensuring citywide access.
-
Jazz After Dark: An initiative spotlighting 150 shows at woman- and person-of-color-owned venues and restaurants, driving patrons into the heart of LA’s diverse business community.
-
Coastal Cultural Tours: Educational tours to historic sites like The Inkwell and Bruce’s Beach, reflecting on the complex history of racial exclusion on California’s coast.
-
The State of Jazz Conference: A two-day global industry gathering on the Burton Chase Peninsula in Marina Del Rey, focusing on the future of the art form.
A Commitment to Green and Social Justice
Aligning with its deep cultural mission, the LAJF is also planned as an environmental leader, pledging to be one of the “greenest” mega-festivals globally. The organizers have committed to banning all fossil fuels on-site and powering the event entirely with green technologies.
By weaving together world-class performance, intentional community engagement, historical education, and pioneering sustainability, the Los Angeles Jazz Festival is poised not just to fill the air with music, but to redefine what a modern cultural festival can be. Come August 2026, Los Angeles will swing to a new, historic rhythm.
